Lorenz and Felix are both football-loving young people who have their origins at 1. FSV Mainz 05. They heard about the Tandem Young Coach Education programme from a mutual friend at the club and didn’t hesitate to take the opportunity to take part in the course. While Felix is still at school, Lorenz works in the CSR department of 1. FSV Mainz 05 and is involved in various social and ecological projects. Although their acquaintance is still very young, the Tandem already felt like a well-rehearsed duo after the programme.

Our story
Lorenz (Tandem Partner): Felix goes to a school that we co-operate with at 1. FSV Mainz 05. We had discussed internally who could go on the Tandem Young Coach Education programme as a Tandem. I was asked to take part in the programme to further promote the topic of inclusion in the club and possibly launch new projects or continue existing projects.
Felix (Young Coach): That’s right, I’m Felix and my club is 1. FSV Mainz 05. I still go to school. We have a working group there where we regularly play football with different teams. I was asked by a friend, who was in this programme last year, if I would like to take part in the Tandem Young Coach Education programme.
Lorenz: I think it’s great that Felix, at the age of 15, has the courage to speak in front of a group of almost 40 people. He’s always very patient before training sessions and when developing ideas, whereas I’m often a bit impetuous myself. Felix has shown me that it can be better to be patient and perhaps not choose the first idea that comes to mind.
Felix: It feels good to stand in front of a group as a trainer. But it’s also a bit difficult because I’ve never done it this way before. I think it’s cool to be here with Lorenz, I really enjoy coaching in a Tandem.
Lorenz: Sometimes you have so many different, super individual players in your groups. But I’ve learnt that you can have a huge positive impact on a training group with very simple tricks. For example, how you can increase the attention of your players through eye contact, or how I must position myself so that they can’t be distracted.
Felix: What’s new for me is the loud shouting. Like the one game we played to get to know each other.
Lorenz: We have a project called ‘Grundschule am Ball’ – a movement initiative for primary schools. This project, which is currently being run by sports students from the University of Mainz, could be expanded and offered at special schools. Felix and I, or last year’s tandem, could also lead sessions there in the future.
